Our TV Episode “Literacy” is Live!

Our second episode of Billions Rising: Out of Poverty focuses on literacy. Literacy is a crucial aspect of the Billions Rising mission, and may be the single most important key to breaking the cycle of poverty and powerlessness.

Episode two features guest Linda Smith, literacy advocate and founder of Reading Village, a program that teaches the power of reading to some of the world’s poorest children. As Smith tells our host Anita Casalina, “In impoverished communities….literacy is one of the most effective tools for sparking development, improving health, for increasing incomes, and for fostering political voice.”

We also welcome guest Kali Woodward, linguist, teacher and founder of the American Youth Literacy Foundation. Woodward is leading a movement to reverse the literacy crisis in America, using ingenious learning tools like the ‘phonibet’, a chart that goes beyond the alphabet to codify all of the different sounds that make up the English language.

Pamela Hawley, founder of Universal Giving, presents this week’s Sustainability Minute. In this segment, she highlights the work of Literate Nation, a nonprofit working for important changes in student literature and education.

Finally, in our What To Watch segment Mark Washington clues us in about LeVar Burton’s new digital version of Reading Rainbow, which is bringing the celebrated television show into the digital realm.
